My mother had bought some comic books for me and my sister, and we made our way to Mc Donald’s. A man in front of us was struggling to complete his order, and he turned and said something to my mom. I noticed that his voice was pitched, and his sentences weren’t clear. She reached in her purse and handed him some money, and he finished placing his order.
We took our food and ended up sitting right next to that man. I whispered to my mom, “What did that man ask for? What did you give him? Why did you talk to him?” She calmly looked at me and said, “He was hungry and needed a little more money to get what he wanted to eat. Just like us, he has books to read, and tried to enjoy them with some food.
She didn’t dehumanize him, and instead made him seen. She didn’t focus on our differences, and instead drew my attention to our similarities.
At that moment, she expressed love.
For him, and for me.
It began with one act of humanity.
Growing up, there are events that make an indelible impression and shape us. The earliest such memory for me took place in 1974, in New York, when I was six years old.
A Foundation Built on Love
From that one encounter came a vision: to reshape how support flows through communities, especially for those overlooked by traditional investment systems.
